A Summer Like No Other With Moscot London

They’ve starred in Mulholland Drive, Secret Window and Netflix drama Russian Doll. Lupita Nyong, Leonardo DiCaprio and Andy Warhol are counted among its patrons. It’s even said they were Fitzgerald’s inspiration for the infamous Doctor Eckleburg billboard watching over the world of The Great Gatsby.

Few, if any, eyewear brands boast the cultural clout of Moscot glasses. Founded out of a wooden pushcart in 1915, the century-old brand is the product of five generations of optics pioneers and has a well-earned reputation for effortlessly stylish frames.

Our owner, Marc, ordered the latest collection of Moscot glasses from MIDO Milan 2019, and is proud to bring this New York brand to OPTIX Opticians in the City of London.

Rather than chasing the trends, Moscot looks to the timeless eyewear styles of the past for design inspiration – shapes are classically retro, their detailing subtle and colour palettes natural. Although the collection of Moscot sunglasses and optical frames is refreshed every season it still pivots around its long-standing favourite models, including Lemtosh, Miltzen, and Yukel.

Every pair of Moscot sunglasses and glasses are handcrafted to last, engineered with the utmost consideration for strength and durability. Attention to detail is everything – hinges are multi-barrelled; rivets are staked to the frames and temple tips are strategically placed for absolute comfort. Only the finest acetates and metals are used, and each frame goes through rigorous quality control testing in Moscot’s New York City labs.

Moscot’s extraordinary collection is matched by its equally extraordinary history.

A boat carrying Belarusian immigrant Hyman Mushcot landed on Ellis Island, New York in 1899. An entrepreneurial 20-something, Hyman had come to New York seeking opportunity and he turned to the business he knew best – optics.

He set up an enterprise selling ready-made glasses out of the back of a pushcart, attracting a loyal customer base of fellow immigrants with a soon-to-be-iconic bright yellow sign adorned with his gigantic black glasses logo. Within five years he opened his first store and the Moscot has thrived ever since.

The business was passed through a succession of sons – Solomon, Joel, Harvey, Kenny – who each in turn grew it into the revered eyewear brand loved by style-savvy spectacle wearers around the globe with outposts in Seoul, Tokyo and London.

Millennial Zack Moscot is the latest Moscot descendant to join the company as chief design officer. The latest collection has sprung from his discerning eye and Moscot’s rich design heritage.
