Before we delve into the exciting new Chanel eyewear collection launched this Spring, let’s take a look at how Chanel got here. It all began with a young girl called Gabrielle.

Coco Chanel — from orphan to fashion icon

In 1883, Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel was born into an impoverished family; her mother was a laundrywoman and her father was a struggling street vendor. She was one of 5 children and lost her mother at the tender age of 11. Soon after she was sent off by her father to live in an orphanage run by nuns. This would prove to be a crucial turning point in her life. It was here that she learnt to sew and at 18 when she could no longer stay at the orphanage. This was the skill she put to use to earn a living as a seamstress. Her innate talent grew and at age 27, she opened a small shop in Paris selling her wares, which at the time was limited to hats.

Her designs caught the eyes of the rich and famous, which gave her the boost she needed to expand her business in 1915, setting up a couture fashion house in the seaside town of Biarritz. Her designs were simple and elegant and she is often cited as one of the key players in breaking women’s fashion free from the restrictive corsetted designs that were mainstream at the time. Coco Chanel had made her mark as a fashion icon and what followed is now part of the cultural fabric of the fashion world.

1921 saw the launch of the iconic No. 5 perfume. Then came the ‘little black dress’ which was highlighted by Vogue as the modern woman’s uniform in 1926, a ‘uniform’ which still endures today as a wardrobe must-have for many women. Chanel’s post-war return to design saw her win the hearts of Hollywood darlings Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Fonda, who all sported her fashions. In 1955, Chanel updated her already-classic handbags with the launch of the Chanel 2.55 quilted handbag. The accolades continued but in 1971 the world said a sad goodbye to Coco Chanel, who passed away aged 88 at Hotel Ritz in Paris.

The House of Chanel persisted and reached new heights of success under the leadership of German couturier Karl Lagerfeld.

The birth of Chanel eyewear

In 1999, Chanel partnered with Luxxotica, the world’s largest eyewear manufacturer, to expand its lifestyle offerings into glasses and sunglasses. Needless to say, this luxury eyewear collection brought the same high-end designs and creativity as the rest of the Chanel range. The collection has attracted numerous celebrity names to front its campaigns, including actresses Kristen Stewart and Lily-Rose Depp and singer Willow Smith. 2020 is no exception.

This year sees 5 international stars from the acting and music industries lend both their names and their personalities to Chanel glasses frames. Continuing with their established style of oversized frames, Chanel has taken inspiration from these famous faces to create 5 new, bold and edgy sunglasses designs. Paris-born photographer Karim Sadli captured each individual wearing their frames in black and white images, a fitting choice for a fashion house known for its monochrome themes.

American actress Margaret Qualley of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood fame sported black metal, butterfly frames with an eyeglass chain made of white faux pearls — a nod to Coco Chanel who proudly wore both real and faux white pearls.

Belgian singer Angèle struck a pose with her oval, transparent acetate sunglasses with an attached glamourous grey-bead eyeglass chain. In stark contrast, French singer-songwriter Sébastien Tellier donned chunky, rectangular sports shield glasses. With the classic double C logo on the temples, these frames also boast a quirky finish with tweed-lined edges, another throwback to Coco Chanel’s personal tastes. Coco’s love of tweed is thought to stem from her time spent in Scotland with her romantic partner, the second Duke of Westminster, Hugh Richard Arthur Grosvenor.

Global singing sensation Pharrell Williams also took to tweed but with more understated metal plaques engraved with a tweed design as an accent to his strong black sunglasses. Rounding off this famous 5, was actress Isabelle Adjani who also wowed onlookers with square, black sunglasses with added subtle feminine curves and angles for a more elegant look.
